Good morning everyone.
It is cloudy here in Six Mile Run, but the weatherman says it is supposed to be warm today, in the 60s. That will be a nice change. We did get rain last night, but I don’t know how long it rained.
We did get our first little snowfall Saturday night. It was enough to cover the ground and the cars and make everything pretty and white. It’s like a blanket covers all of the dirt and makes it clean. Then it made me think, Jesus is our blanket, which covers us as white as snow, when He takes our sin away when we believe in Him and ask Him for forgiveness.
It was pretty chilly on Saturday and I decided to make some beef vegetable soup and it got very good for our supper. Soup always taste so good when it is cold outside.
I forgot to mention when I wrote about the Reality Church of God in Robertsdale had moved to the Coal Miners’ Museum and the former Methodist Church that the Coal Miners Museum moved back to the old Reality Movie House.
This past Sunday I wasn’t able to to to church and Pastor Detwiler was on vacation and Pastor Jim Lyons was our speaker. I did listen on the phone church. He talks about hope.
I can’t always hear that well on the phone and it kept cutting out on me, but this past Sunday was the first Sunday of Advent and the first Sunday is Hope. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Advent, the four Sundays before Christmas, we light a candle for each Sunday and talk about what the candle represents. Now Advent means coming or arrival. The focus of the entire season is the celebration of the birth of Jesus the Christ in His first Advent and the return of Christ the King in his Second Advent.
The advent wreath, which holds the candles, is a tradition that symbolizes the passage of the four weeks of Advent. The wreath is made of evergreen, symbolizing everlasting life. The circle represents the continuous love of God, with no beginning and no end, as well as the soul’s immortality.
There are five candles in the Advent wreath; three purple, one pink and one white. The white candle is the Christ candle. The first candle to be lit (last Sunday) was purple, and it is called the “Candle of Hope.” It symbolizes faith in God keeping his promises to humanity.
After lighting the candle there is a Bible reading. This past Sunday was Romans 15: 12-13 “And again, Isaiah says, the root of Jesse will spring up, one who will arise to rule over the nations; the Gentiles will hope in Him.” May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
This coming Sunday we will light the second purple candle. I hope I was able to explain the Advent to you so you could understand it.
You know on TV you see a lot of things to remind you of Christmas and it will say, “Believe in the Magic of Christmas.” What it really should say is “Believe in the Miracle of Christmas” because that is what Christmas is truly all about.
Our church here in town, the Six Mile Run Church of God, is planning to have a Christmas Eve candlelight service this year if all goes well and the coronavirus doesn’t get out of control. The service will be Dec. 24 at 7 p.m. All are welcome. I will keep you informed, so if anything changes I will let you know.
When I read Donna McCabe’s “Wood Talk” and she wrote about enjoying their dog open her Christmas presents, it reminded me of when we had our little dachshund “Lady.” We used to hide her presents under the tree, under other presents, but she would always find them and we would laugh at how she would hold them and tear the paper off of them. She was a funny little dog. She was the runt of the litter and never did get very big. She got hit by a car and we had to have her put to sleep just before we moved back to Pennsylvania. She sure was a lot of fun while we had her.
Jessica is going to take the girls to the Christmas parade this evening in Saxton. Thanks to a lot of hard work by the CHIP committee, there will be a parade this year. I understand that beside Santa being there, he will also have two reindeer with him, Comet and Vixen. That should be exciting for the kids. It’s nice the kids have the story of Santa and get excited about him and his visit at Christmas, but when they are old enough to understand they need to know the Christmas story about Jesus and how he came to earth as a tiny baby, and that each year we celebrate His birth at Christmas.
I am glad the weather is supposed to be nice for the parade and people will be able to be out and enjoy some time with their families. Thanks again to all who helped to make this event possible for people of the Broad Top to enjoy.
I want to offer my sincere sympathy to the family of Betty Jean (Brown) Baughman, of the Village at Morrisons Cove, who passed away to her heavenly home on Nov. 25. May God comfort here children, Dennis, Donald, David, Jennie and Annie and all of their families and a special niece Mae “Tootsie” Cross and her family and all others who knew and loved her. God bless you all with peace and strength in your time of sorrow.
Sincere sympathy to the family of Calvin Harrison Covert, of Saxton, who passed away on Nov. 21. May God comfort his daughters, Amanda and Ashley, and his brother Allan and their families and all others who knew and loved him. May God be with you all in your time of sorrow.
Sincere sympathy to the family of Martha (Bock) Zinoble of Orbisonia, who passed away on Nov. 27. May God comfort her daughter Jennifer, brothers William, Elwood and Frank and all of their families. May God’s comfort bring you to the peace and strength you need in your time of sorrow.
Pastor Mary Garvey’s message this week was also on the Advent and the first Sunday was the Candle of Hope. Pastor Garvey, thank you for your messages in the News of Religion. Also, thanks to Pastor Veil on his articles in the Bible Questions and Answers. I appreciate them both.
Congratulations to Aaron Day and Gavin Mills for being selected for the 2021 ICC Football All-Star Team. They are from Tussey Mountain.

Happy anniversary to Curtis and Wendy Heath of Broad Top City, who will celebrate their special day on Dec. 14, and happy anniversary to Danny and Stephanie Brode, of Saxton, who will celebrate their special day on Dec. 16. May God bless both couples and bless them with many more years of happy married life.
Hugs this week go to my cousin, Bill Hitchens, of Dillsburg, to wish him a very happy birthday on Dec. 17. He was our family’s miracle baby in 1943, when he arrived two months early at our house in Six Mile Run. Bill really made everything exciting when the adults discovered that he was about to be born. His birth was a miracle from the time the pains started until they safely had him in a shoebox with a heating pad around him to keep him warm and alive. Have a great birthday, Bill, and God’s blessings for many more healthy, happy years. God bless you and your family.
