German vegetable consumption up again in 2021, tomato still most popular – FreshPlaza.com

On the occasion of Fresh Veggies Day, fresh seasonal vegetables will be celebrated worldwide on June 16. The trend toward conscious, healthy eating is also reflected in Germany’s overall vegetable consumption. This rose again last year, from 8,780 tons to 9,095 tons. This means that 109.4 kg of vegetables were eaten per capita in Germany. In 2020, the figure was 105.6 kg, and in 2019 only 99.5 kg.
As Germany’s most popular vegetable, the tomato once again topped the ranking.
Germany’s 10 most purchased vegetables (kg/per household):
1. tomatoes (13.5kg)
2. carrots (10.4 kg)
3. cucumbers (10.1 kg)
4. onions (8.8 kg)
5. peppers (8,0 kg)
6. iceberg lettuce (3.3 kg)
7. zucchini (2,5 kg)
8. mushrooms (2,4 kg)
9. asparagus (2,2 kg)
10. cauliflower (2,1kg)
