The St. Louis Cardinals have agreed to a four-year, $44 million contract with free-agent left-hander Steven Matz, sources told The Athletic late Tuesday night. The deal, which is pending a physical, is worth up to $48 million with incentives. ESPN first reported the news.

Matz, 30, spent last season with the Toronto Blue Jays after playing his first six major-league seasons with the New York Mets. He went 14-7 with a 3.82 ERA in 29 starts with the Jays, striking our 144 and walking 43 over 150 2/3 innings.

Matz has a career ERA of 4.24. He has pitched at least 150 innings in each of the last three full seasons, excluding the shortened 2020 campaign.
