Switzerland: Fenaco strengthens its commitment to organic farming – FreshPlaza.com

Fenaco is promoting the organic production of crops that are particularly in demand. From this year’s harvest, the agricultural cooperative will indeed take over all organically grown varieties of cereals, legumes and oilseeds of more than 50 local grain collection sites throughout Switzerland. The production of sunflowers, field beans, edible oats and soybeans will receive additional financial support.
Swiss consumers are buying more and more food products that are grown sustainably. In parallel, the requirements to obtain labels have been tightened. From 2022, for example, all feed for ruminants on organic farms must come from Swiss Bud crops. As a result, the demand for Swiss organic feed is increasing, along with the need for organically cultivated land. For many years, Fenaco has been an important actor on the organic market, especially in the field of cattle feed. The agricultural cooperative is now further promoting the organic production of crops that are highly solicited in Switzerland, by improving the offer of local grain collection sites, with comprehensive and sustainable cultivation recommendations, as well as economic incentives.
Local grain collection centers to take all organic COP crops
Starting this year, a network of over 50 local collection centers of organic grains of the LANDI cooperatives throughout Switzerland is now taking over all the organic COP crops, including all varieties of cereals, oilseeds and protein crops. This way, farmers no longer need to travel long distances.
A collaboration agreement exists between the grain collection center and the agricultural company, but Fenaco also pays extra for the cultivation of particularly popular crops such as sunflowers, field beans, edible oats and soybeans.
Comprehensive advisory concept
Besides improving the management of organic COP crops, Fenaco is also introducing a comprehensive advisory service for organic producers, providing a direct contact person at their LANDI cooperative, who is familiar with the local conditions. The producers also have access to the recommendations of specialists from subsidiary companies of Fenaco, such as UFA Seeds, LANDOR, AGROLINE and UFA.
“Organic farmers think more broadly and therefore need advice that combines issues related to seeds, plant nutrition, livestock, and alternative methods for plant protection,” explains Heinz Mollet, head of the Agro division of Fenaco. “We are able to offer them all this expertise within a comprehensive service.” Crop rotation and maintenance measures are essential elements of this advice in order to preserve the fertility of the soils and benefit from high yield stability.
