Peru's organic blueberry production will grow again – FreshPlaza.com

Organic blueberry production offers Peru, the world’s leading fresh blueberries exporter, an attractive commercial opportunity. “According to our calculations, nearly 5% of the blueberries exported last season were organic. We estimate there will be a 30% increase in the volume of blueberry exports in the 2021/2022 campaign and that 7% of the product exported will be organic,” stated Luis Miguel Vegas, General Manager of Proarandanos.
Under these positive projections, Blueberries Consulting will bring three leading experts in organic production to the next Trujillo Peru 2022 International Blueberries Seminar. The event will be held on July 6 and 7 and will be attended by Martin Cotos, Operations Manager of Control Union, and Antonio Gaete and Emilio Merino, international organic production advisors, who will analyze the opportunities, risks, and challenges faced by Peruvian producers who want to participate in this increasingly demanded niche.
Emilio Merino will present the talk “Organic production in blueberries: management and biostimulation of the crop”, a topic that takes greater relevance when considering the increase in generalized costs that the cultivation of blueberries has experienced. He will present this talk from La Libertad, the department with the largest organic blueberry plantation in Peru, according to data from Senasa.
Martin Cotos will hold a talk about “Updating regulations for organic production in the USA and Europe”. Cotos will review the best strategies and practices to comply with organic regulations in both destinations, as well as what the Peruvian industry should aspire to do to become export leaders of the organic fruit.
Finally, Antonio Gaete will give advice to local producers who decide to start the change through the talk “Critical points to consider in the organic production of blueberries in Peru”.
