Organic banana producers in the Dominican Republic are concerned about the global banana market and are hoping it will recover over the next three weeks. The Russian war in Ukraine and the oversupply in markets is their biggest worry, says Ramon Garcia, executive coordinator from organic banana producer & exporter Banasplash.

“Right now we are concerned about the situation in the Ukraine and the effect this has on the global market. We know the price is coming down. We will see in two to three weeks how the market is doing and if prices have recovered. Right now we export about 15-20 containers of our own organic bananas per week,” notes Garcia.
Banasplash exports their organic bananas to the Netherlands, Germany, France, Poland as main markets. The Nordic countries are also an important market for their organic produce.
“Although the prices are better for organic bananas, the war situation in Ukraine is still a worry. The situation in Ecuador has created even more problems. It is going to make problems for us, because they will be sending bananas intended for Russia to other markets. We will wait and see what the impact will be. Summer is coming in Europe now. There will be other kind of summer fruits on offer in the market too. It is going to put pressure on banana sales,” says Garcia.
Although the small island nation is situated so close the USA, where there is a big market for organic, many do not send exports there. “It is twice as expensive to ship to the USA, compared to shipping to Europe, although we are so close. There are also other big companies operating in that market,” comments Garcia.
Banasplash produces the organic bananas on 700 hectares of farmlands. The farmers are shareholders in the company. Their farms are spread across different locations on the island. They started producing bananas 20 years ago. The farms and packhouses hold Global Gap and Fairtrade certification, while they have their own organic fertiliser factory on one of the farms.
