Supplies of Brussels sprouts are strong coming from the West Coast.
“The fields in Washington are projected to have promotable volume all the way through January,” says Andres Quiroz, commodity manager of Miami, FL-based Alpine Fresh, who notes that supplies look similar to last year at this time. “The only difference this year is that Canadian production will wrap up a week earlier due to the higher temperatures experienced at very beginning of the season.”
Along with Washington and Canada, supplies are also coming from California.
Expanding organic production
As for demand, it is anticipated to slow down following U.S. Thanksgiving this week and then expected to ramp back up again in December. “We’ve seen consumption increase year after year and we expect this trend to continue. We keep increasing our conventional and organic production every year and next year we are looking to have year-round organic production,” says Quiroz.
To also help with consumption, this year Alpine Fresh has added a 1 lb. bag of microwavable conventional Brussels sprouts. For its organic production starting up in January out of Mexico, it will also add a 1 lb. microwavable bag under Alpine Fresh’s Hippie Organics label.
